Beckley, W.Va.–Nathan Adrian scored 26 points and the West Virginia University basketball team thumped WVU Tech 131-56 on Saturday evening in an exhibition game at the King Coal Beckley Automall Arena in Beckley, West Virginia.
Adrian had a stellar performance connecting on 10-of-12 from the field and 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. The senior forward grabbed five boards and had five assists.
Freshman Lamont West tallied 17 points, including three from 3-point range. Esa Ahmad added 14 points and Jevon Carter had 11 for the Mountaineers.
Sagaba Konate grabbed 10 rebounds.
WVU opened the second half on a 29-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer from West to take a 91-27 lead with 15:17 left. The lanky freshman dropped three 3s in just over a minute.
West put the Mountaineers at the century mark on a jumper with 13:10 remaining.
WVU took a commanding 19-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. The Mountaineers led 62-23 at the half.
Ryan Atkins led the Golden Bears with 17 points and six rebounds. Junior Arrey added 13 points.
WVU outrebounded WVU Tech, 49-26.
The Mountaineers shot 57.6 percent from the floor and 35.1 percent from 3-point land.
WVU forced 33 turnovers on 21 steals leading to 51 points off turnovers.
WVU Tech shot an abysmal 8.7 percent from beyond the arc and 40.8 percent from the field.
The Mountaineers will open the season on Friday, Nov. 11 against Mount St. Mary’s at the Coliseum. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
