All signs point to Cactus Bowl for West Virginia

Remember that article I wrote just a few days ago complaining about how the NCAA bowl eligibility ruling could hurt West Virginia, specifically in terms of location? If you didn’t read it you can do so here. But honestly there is no point to do so now. Kansas State’s Morgan Burns took care of that argument last night.

With the Mountaineers loss to Kansas State Saturday night WVU is now staring squarely at a January 2nd matchup against a Pac 12 team in the Cactus Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona.

With Texas beating Baylor earlier in the day the Mountaineers had been given a small window to earn an invitation to the Russell Athletic Bowl. Baylor had lost three of their last four and the Mountaineers were on a four game winning streak. Unfortunately West Virginia could not capitalize and instead of playing in Florida their destination looks now to be on the other side of the country.

The Texas bowl is still enamored with the possibility of two Texas based schools and the Liberty has Kansas State squarely in their sights.

The last time the Mountaineers played in this particular bowl game it was called the bowl in 1998. The Mountaineers lost that game 34-31 to Missouri.

While there is still a slim possibility the Mountaineers end up back in Memphis all signs are pointing toward Phoenix.
