MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Feb. 23, 2021) – Freshman Chloe Asper of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week, announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Asper’s honor is the first for a WVU gymnast since Chloe Cluchey was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week on Jan. 27, 2020. Additionally, four-time All-American Kirah Koshinski was the last Mountaineer to win Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors in 2016.
The award follows Asper’s balance beam performance in the Mountaineers’ road contest at Denver on Feb. 21, where she tied for first overall with a career-high score of 9.9.
The Hanover, Pennsylvania, native appeared in the beam lineup for just the second time this season and bested her previous mark of 9.8 set in her debut against Denver on Feb. 11.
With Asper’s hit routine in the anchor position, West Virginia propelled to a season-high total in a 49.175-49.125 event win over No. 9-ranked Denver. Her score also helped WVU reach a 195.000 or better for the third straight meet, as the Mountaineers closed out competition on the balance beam event.
Of note, Asper owns the seventh-highest beam average in the Big 12 with a 9.85. She also is tied at No. 38 nationally. Up next, WVU heads to Ames, Iowa, on Monday, March 1, to wrap up its Big 12 slate with No. 24 Iowa State. Competition is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET inside the Hilton Coliseum.
