Baylor comes from behind to beat WVU

WACO, Texas–Baylor rallied late in the game to defeat West Virginia 6-5 on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (13-8, 0-1 Big 12) had a 5-3 lead in the seventh but the Bears (14-6, 1-0) scored a run in each of the final three innings, including Davis Wendzel’s walk-off single in the ninth.

Alek Manoah pitched 7.1 innings and earned the no-decision. He gave up five runs on eight hits while fanning six.

Sam Kessler (1-1) suffered the loss.

WVU jumped out to a 2-0 lead right out of the gate when Marques Inman crushed a two-run home run to left center.

But in the bottom half of the inning a leadoff walk and two hits tied the game at 2-2. Richard Cunningham’s triple to left field plated Baylor’s first run. Then Andy Thomas’ groundout scored Cunningham.

In the bottom of the second, the Bears took a 3-2 lead after Josh Bissonette tripled and scored on Nick Loftin’s line out.

With two outs and bases loaded, Inman’s base-clearing double gave the Mountaineers a 5-3 lead in the fifth.

Manoah got in a little trouble in the bottom of the sixth, surrendering a leadoff walk and a double. However, the junior struck out Davion Downey, forced Cole Haring to groundout before Bissonette flied out to end the frame.

In the seventh, Baylor cut the deficit to one and tied it in the eighth when Bissonette singled home the tying run off Kessler.

The two teams play the second game of the series on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (ET).
