Big 12 bands, spirit squads won’t travel in 2020

While questions linger about the 2020 fall athletic season, one aspect was answered on Wednesday afternoon when the Big 12 conference made a major announcement involving road games.

According to a report from, all 10 schools in the Big 12 Conference have agreed that if there is a college football season this year, bands and spirit groups will not be allowed to travel to road games. The information came in a story about Texas Tech announcing it would be pausing the sale of single-game tickets.

The change comes as one of many lifestyle changes because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have informed our band and spirit squads that there will be no travel to road games this year,” Texas Tech senior associate athletics director Robert Giovannetti told “I don’t know if the word would be ‘mandate’. I just think all the schools agreed, for safety and social distancing and everything, it would make the most sense.”

As of now, bands and spirit squads will still be permitted at home contests.
