Big 12 Hoops: Conference Games Around the Corner

Big 12 conference basketball has been one of the more exciting conferences to keep track of over the past few years. With so many top teams in the Big 12, we’ll be bringing you a weekly recap of what’s going on in the Big 12.

December 6 – December 13 Big 12 Games:

Villanova at Texas: This Top 25-ranked matchup in Austin was the Longhorns’s first loss for the season. Although the Longhorns lost, Shaka Smart has this team finally looking like those VCU teams Smart was known for.

Grambling at Texas Tech: The Top 25-ranked Red Raiders played a struggling Grambling team last Sunday, essentially doubling what Grambling put up.

Oklahoma at TCU: The first Big 12 matchup of the 2020-2021 season was underway in Fort Worth, Texas this past Sunday. The Sooners handed the Horned Frogs their first loss of the season, while winning just their second game. Earlier in November, the Sooners were one of the first Big 12 basketball teams to pause basketball activities due to COVID-19 concerns.

DePaul at Iowa State: Canceled due to COVID-19.

Tuesday, December 8, 2020:

Creighton at Kansas: Allen Field House may be a venue where visiting teams actually have a chance to win this season. Just ask Creighton, who lost by just one point last Tuesday in Lawrence. The Jayhawks are also a one-loss team in the Big 12, but have shown some signs of struggle so maybe there’s hope for a road win for the Mountaineers this year?

Fort Hayes State at Kansas State: This one was a head-scratcher for basketball fans all over. A non-conference home game for the Wildcats, aka it’s supposed to be a paid victory. The Wildcats have just one win on their resume this season, and sadly lost by almost 20 points at home in Manhattan.

Oral Roberts at Oklahoma State: The Cowboys carried on their undefeated record with a home win over Oral Roberts. Oklahoma State scored just shy of 85 points, with one freshman accounting for 29 points.

Nicholls at Baylor: Canceled due to COVID-19

Wednesday, December 9, 2020:

Stephen F. Austin at Baylor: The Bears are one of the teams to beat this season, sitting at the top just below Gonzaga, the Bears have a target on their backs. Just a day after their Nicholls matchup was canceled, the Bears took down Stephen F. Austin at home. The Bears are still undefeated for the 2020-2021 season thus far.

Texas State at Texas: The Longhorns pulled off yet another near-20 point victory to point out that they are in fact a top team in the conference.

Abilene Christian at Texas Tech: The Red Raiders had a close victory over Abilene Christian in a low-scoring game that went down to the wire. The Red Raiders narrowly avoided the upset and showed they may have some weaknesses on the court down the road.

Providence at TCU: The Horned Frogs were handed their second home loss of the season by Providence last week. TCU sits 4-2 early in the season, which could have potential post-season ramifications as March draws near.

Oklahoma at Xavier: The Sooners traveled to Ohio to face the undefeated Xavier Musketeers last week, where they were met with their first loss of the season. The Sooners lost to the Musketeers by more than 20 points.

Friday, December 11, 2020:

Iowa State at Iowa: The basketball battle for bragging rights in the State of Iowa was not a close game, with the Cyclones losing to the Hawkeyes by almost 30 points. The Hawkeyes have just one win for the season.

Omaha at Kansas: The Jayhawks bounced back from their close win over Creighton in Lawrence on Friday. After a narrow win, Kansas was able to win by almost double over Omaha making those who thought Allen Field House could be a winnable venue quickly rethink that thought.

Milwaukee at Kansas State: The Wildcats bounced back from their home loss earlier in the week to secure their second win of the season. The Wildcats are in the bottom half of the Big 12 and will have an uphill battle in the conference in order to make their presence known.

Texas A&M CC at Texas Tech: The Red Raiders played host to a local junior college team during Saturday’s last regular season football day. Texas Tech was able to win another game by 20 points, further cementing their strength on the court early on this season.

Texas A&M at TCU: The Horned Frogs faced an old Big 12 team Saturday in Fort Worth, finding their fifth win of the season over the A&M Aggies. Saturday’s win over A&M was the first time the two teams have plated each other since 1996.

Oklahoma State at Wichita State: The Cowboys went on the road Saturday as their football program was taking care of the Bears over in Waco. The Cowboys played Wichita State and narrowly missed find their first loss of the season.

Florida A&M at Oklahoma: The Sooners had another statement non-conference win Saturday in Norman. Oklahoma scored 30 more points than Florida A&M to secure their third win of the season.
