Conference games during football season are the meat and bones of every schedule. These games make up the obvious majority of the season and make or break your team. With the start of the football season mere weeks away, Blue Gold Sports will be bringing you the opportunity to relive last season’s conference match-ups as a way to prepare for the September games we all wish would get here sooner.
This season, the Mountaineers will open up conference play in Lawrence, Kansas to take on the Jayhawks. The good guys overcame the Jayhawks in a 48-21 victory last November. In the victory, the Mountaineer offense was led by Skyler Howard, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more. Justin Crawford rushed for 129 yards that evening, followed by 127 yards from then-freshman Kennedy McKoy. The victory sat the Mountaineers at 8-0 on their season, going into the Texas game the following week.
This season, the Mountaineers make their return to Kansas to take on a team that is coming off a two-win season. The Jayhawks football program always desires to win, as evidenced by their field storming post-victory last season. The Jayhawks have the potential to be an improved team in comparison to last season as head coach David Beaty enters his third year as head coach. Kansas has brought in several transfers and junior college players eligible to play this season, adding a variety and certain amount of option for players and coaches alike in way they have not had in the past. Coach Beaty is using every tool in the toolbox over the off-season to make his team a success and his first real test for the season will be the Mountaineers rounding out the month of September.
Can the Jayhawks beat the Mountaineers or will the Mountaineers start off conference play by singing “Country Roads” as they leave Kansas? Tell us your thoughts and what you think will happen in this Big 12 conference opener.
