Big 12 Newcomers of the Week: Football and Basketball

The Big 12 conference doles out weekly accolades in football, and now basketball since the season has started. Last week, football’s Sam James was the Newcomer of the Week last week and this week West Virginia boasts not one, but two Newcomers of the Week.

The Mountaineers men’s basketball team took a short road trip to that town just slightly north, and took on the Pittsburgh Panthers. The Mountaineers beat the Panthers 68-53 Friday night, led by Oscar Tshiebwe’s double-double.

Tshiebwe scored 20 points and 17 rebounds helping to earn his title of Big 12 Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week.

In the much-needed road upset, Jarret Doege made his quarterback debut for the 2019 season. Doege led the Mountaineers to their fourth win of the season, toppling the Kansas State Wildcats 24-20. Doege was 20/30 for 234 yards and three touchdowns.

Doege’s debut in the Old Gold and Blue helped to give him the football title of Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

The men’s hoops team plays host to Northern Colorado Monday evening, and Boston University Friday evening as part of their participation in the Cancun Challenge.

The football team hosts their final home game of the season with Senior Day and taking on the Oklahoma State Cowboys, kicking off at noon on ESPN2.
