Blue Gold Sports Staff Predictions Game Ten: Kansas State Wildcats

Ashley O’Brien: Last week sucked. I do think despite the loss, the way this team reacts this week will be different than how they played after losses earlier in the year. I think it will be a close game, and I think the defensive line will have one of their best games of the season. The West Virginia run game will have to be somewhat effective in order to give Jarret Doege more time in the pocket. He is not mobile enough to evade a good pass rush which Kansas State has. I think the Mountaineers hang around, but just cannot get it done late.

Wesley Shoemaker: I was too high on this team. I think I got false hope and then when an actual defense came to town, this young offensive line struggled. Unfortunately, Kansas State has a good defensive line, and should again challenge West Virginia. The Mountaineers will have to be sound and get the ball to the edge of the field quickly if they want to find success. Expect a lot of screen passes, and quick slants similar to what was seen early in the Iowa State game. This West Virginia defense is still legit and they have a lot of older guys that are desperate to win and they are doing everything they can. The defense should carry West Virginia and the Mountaineers to a low scoring victory.

Aaron Parker: Coming off a home loss to Oklahoma State, I think the Mountaineers will be ready to play in Manhattan, Kansas. WVU’s offense was extremely inefficient last Saturday, as the Mountaineers struggled to even get a first down. While the offense played bad, a lot of that was Oklahoma State’s imposing defense. Moving on from the loss, I think the offensive line will improve and open up some holes in the run game for Leddie Brown. While Skylar Thompson and Deuce Vaughn have been filling it up for Kansas State over the last month, I have faith that the Mountaineer defense will come to play and keep them from rolling. I think Kansas State will get some big plays, including a long touchdown run by Deuce Vaughn. I think the Mountaineers will find the end zone twice on the ground and once in the air. I believe this game will come down to a field goal, and somebody is going to have to step up late.

Carleigh Minor: Moving on from a devastating loss against OSU, I believe the Mountaineers will be able to beat Kansas State on Saturday. Looking at the game between the two teams the previous year, West Virginia University will have a decent chance at winning this year’s game. Leddie Brown will have at least a couple of openings to make some runs on Saturday. I also would like to see Garrett Greene make an appearance, I think it would be a good game for him to showcase his skills.

Quinn Burkitt: One of the hottest teams in the Big 12 conference will be hosting the Mountaineers in Manhattan, Kansas this weekend as Kansas State has won three straight matchups. However, I believe West Virginia’s defensive front is ready to swallow up Skylar Thompson and the Wildcats backfield on Saturday after falling so bad to then-No. 11 Oklahoma State. Thompson has been on a tear in those last three games throwing for three touchdowns and 792 yards through three weeks. I do think that the Mountaineer defensive line of Dante Stills, Taijh Alston and Akheem Mesidor should be enough to shut down the Wildcats offensive attack.

Hayley Maguire: Kansas state has a good passing game. The Mountaineers need this win to have any chance at qualifying for a bowl game while Kansas is already eligible. Kansas is on a three-game winning streak but they are 0-3 in the big 12. The Mountaineers have been hit or miss all season long and that’s even with Doege playing at his best. It should be an extremely tight game but, especially being away for the first time in two weeks, I don’t think the Mountaineers will pull through.
