Bob Huggins Talks About Selection Sunday Draw

After the Selection Sunday show on Sunday night, WVU coach Bob Huggins spoke to the media about receiving the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and playing Morehead State on Friday.

“Pleased with the seed where we are. Getting ready to go home and watch four or five Morehead (State) games and then I can fill you in a little bit better,” Huggins said.

In the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament, forward Derek Culver looked terrible physically, even laying down on the bench at times. Culver received an IV at halftime and played much better. Huggins spoke about Culver’s health over the last couple of days.

“He’s (Culver) doing good,” Huggins said. “He’s running well and we just got to get him to be more assertive around the rim again.”

During the Selection Sunday show on CBS, they did not release the times and locations for the games, just the days.

“We don’t know anything other than we’re playing sometime on Friday, we don’t know when we’re leaving,” Huggins said. “I think we are leaving tomorrow but we don’t know what time tomorrow, yet. We need to find that out so we can plan to work out here before we go if possible.”

Last season, the Mountaineers were supposed to return to the NCAA Tournament but did not because of COVID-19 breaking out during conference tournament week. Being selected to this year’s tournament means just a little bit more for everyone.

“It’s been a long year with a lot of starts and stops and so forth,” Huggins said. “I think, for the most part, these guys have been really good. We had a couple of letdowns, but I don’t see how that happens in the NCAA Tournament.”

With getting a high seed, you almost 100% of the time will face a team from a low-major conference. Morehead State—in their last 20 games—are 19-1. Huggins surprisingly isn’t too impressed by that.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is they (Morehead State) didn’t play in the Big 12,” Huggins said. “There is a difference when you look at that bracket and look at the respect that our league got.”

“I’m sure they’re capable. I don’t really know anything about them right now. I will but I don’t know anything about them now,” Huggins added.
