Bracketology Update Before Conference Tournament

With just less than six days before Selection Sunday, it’s the most important time of the year for ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. In Lunardi’s latest update, he has the Mountaineers as a No. 3 seed.

Here’s WVU’s current bracket:

  1. Michigan / 16. North Dakota St.
  2. Houston / 15. Bryant
  3. West Virginia / 14. Morehead St.
  4. Oklahoma St. / 13. Liberty
  5. Colorado / 12. Winthrop
  6. Tennessee / 11. Georgia Tech
  7. Wisconsin / 10. UCLA
  8. Florida / 9. Virginia Tech

As of now, I believe WVU deserves to be where they’re at, following the loss to Oklahoma State in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Saturday. It’s a pivotal week for the Mountaineers with the Big 12 conference tournament potentially deciding seed lines for the NCAA Tournament. With a chance at beating Oklahoma State, Baylor and Kansas, the Mountaineers can move up to a No. 2 seed, and with other scenarios, move up to a No. 1 seed. If WVU loses to Oklahoma State on Thursday morning, West Virginia will have a long wait of 72+ hours until the bracket is announced.

Big 12 Seeds

  • Baylor – 1 Seed
  • Kansas – 3 Seed
  • Texas – 3 Seed
  • West Virginia – 3 Seed
  • Oklahoma State – 4 Seed
  • Texas Tech – 5 Seed
  • Oklahoma – 6 Seed

Baylor is the only team in the Big 12 that will be safe from moving. Even with a first-round loss, the Bears would stay at the one-line. Kansas, Texas, WVU and Oklahoma State all have great opportunities this weekend to boost their resumes and move up in the bracket. Oklahoma has to take care of business against Iowa State on Wednesday night, and then they can also join the party.
