Charleston is home to close to fifty thousand people, now including Avon Cobourne, the all-time leading rusher in WVU and Big East history. The New Jersey native and former Mountaineer recently accepted a new position with the Charleston Family YMCA as the membership and marketing director.
Cobourne joined the show last night to discuss his football journey starting with tearing his ACL in high school, his time at WVU, the growing pains of the NFL, and his successful career in the CFL. The conversation did not stop there. Avon shared how he met his wife, who is from Charleston, what led him to giving up a running backs coaching gig with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and his new position at the Charleston Family YMCA.
I enjoyed every bit of this conversation. Not only because Avon is an all-time great running back with the Gold and Blue, but because of his passion, joy, and eagerness to talk about how he can make a difference in his new role. His hope is to help mold, motivate, and be a part of a community.
Parents signing their children up for memberships tend to recognize him. “Hi, I am here to sign up for a new…are you Avon Cobourne?” “Yes. Yes I am.”
Speaking with Cobourne was a pleasure. The conversation went so well I feel I may have gained a new guest co-host. Listen to the interview in its entirety below.
