AMES, Iowa–Derek Culver and Miles “Deuce” McBride both dropped 17 points as WVU downed Iowa State 77-71 on Tuesday night.
Taz Sherman scored 12 points for the Mountaineers (20-10, 8-9 Big 12) and Oscar Tshiebwe added 11.
Rasir Bolton tallied 21 points for the Cyclones (12-18, 5-12. Prentiss Nixon had 19 points and Solomon Young 11.
WVU controlled a 38-30 edge over Iowa State on the boards.
The Mountaineers shot 56% from the field in the first half to build a 44-31 halftime lead. However, Iowa State would do what most of WVU’s opponents had done this season and erased a double-digit deficit, which was fueled by an 11-0 run to trail by just two, 44-42.
Sherman sank a pair of free throws with 14:18 left to end the run.
Iowa State refused to go away and tied the game 48-48 on a pair of 3s from Nixon and Bolton
The Mountaineers answered with a 10-0 run to lead 70-60 with 2:47 left.
WVU shot 44 percent from the floor, 33 percent from beyond the arc and 78 percent from the charity stripe.
The Cyclones shot 43 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the line.
The Mountaineers finish the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Baylor on Senior Day.
