MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Darius Hill completed the rally in the ninth with a walk-off homer, lifting No. 17 West Virginia past TCU 6-5 in the series finale on Sunday.
Trailing 5-3, Kevin Brophy launched a solo shot to right field, pulling the Mountaineers within one. Next, Tyler Doanes flied out before Brandon White reached on a throwing error, bringing the senior right fielder to the plate.
Down to his final strike, Hill blasted a pitch to right center and salvaging the last game of the three game series against the Horned Frogs (26-20).
Sam Kessler (5-2) earned the win for the Mountaineers (28-17). He tossed 3.1 innings, surrendering one run on two hits.
Marcelo Perez (3-2) suffered the loss for TCU.
Hill made his 220th career-start, tying the school record.
Ivan Gonzalez, Doanes and Phillip Dull all had two hits for WVU.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Jake Guenther scored on Johnny Rizer’s groundout.
In the third, the Mountaineers tied the game after White’s groundout scored Tevin Tucker.
But TCU regained the lead in the sixth. Guenther homered to right field. Then Rizer scored on Conner Shepherd’s double. Bobby Goodloe’s RBI single made it a 4-1 game.
WVU would cut the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. Dull scored on Doanes’ double. Then Andrew Zitel scored on White’s infield single.
However, the Horned Frogs added an insurance run in the ninth on Guenther’s long ball over the right field wall, setting the stage for another exciting finish.
The Mountaineers travel to Blacksburg on Wednesday to battle Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. (ET).
