Devin Williams’s departure not a “done deal”

The press released issued early Tuesday morning made it seem as though Junior forward Devin Williams was all but gone. Coach Huggins was quoted as thanking Williams for his contributions, it was a farewell statement, the decision was made.

However, last night Coach Huggins called into Sportsline and muddied the waters a little regarding whether or not Williams leaving was definite. “As of Tuesday morning, he told me he was not going to hire an agent,” Huggins told Sportsline.

Under new NCAA guidelines players can test the NBA waters, much like they do with the NFL, without officially declaring for the draft. However, the moment a collegiate player hires an agent his eligibility is gone. In this case, Williams has not made that last important step just yet according to Huggins. “Do I think it is a done deal? No.” Huggins continued although he did stop short of making a declarative assessment stating, “I have absolutely no clue.”

Williams has just short of two months (May 25th deadline) to officially make his decision. During that time Williams will get a good idea of where he stands in the pecking order in the 2016 NBA draft. Williams will presumably test the waters overseas, something that has been speculated for the last few months.

So while the press release issued by WVU made it seem as though Williams had made his decision, the Mountaineers leading rebounder has left just enough of the door open to return for his senior season.

On a side note, speaking to a NBA scouts on the condition of anonymity Williams was not seen as a potential NBA draft pick this season.
