The opinions were strong regarding Williams’ decision to leave WVU early to pursue a career in professional basketball. Some felt he was not ready while some simply didn’t want to see him leave the Mountaineers.
Williams had until May 25th to make his final decision. However, two weeks ago Williams signed with an agent essentially ending his collegiate career. News broke this week that Williams did not receive an invite from the NBA to participate in its pre-draft combine.
While many feel this was a hit to his professional aspirations that may be a misguided assumption. Rumors had swirled for months that Williams would pursue a professional career overseas. That still seems to be the case, obviously more so now. While Williams would have undoubtedly graciously accepted an invitation to the NBA combine it appears Williams was realistic about his future.
Most had a feeling Williams would forego his senior season in Morgantown. However, most also felt he would have the best chance at success overseas. Williams’ failure to receive that coveted invite will not come as a surprise to most fans. However, Willliams success overseas should not come as a surprise either. That may have been the plan all along.
