Dotson pitches WVU past No. 18 Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.–Conner Dotson’s stellar performance carried West Virginia University past No.18 Coastal Carolina 4-1 on Monday afternoon in the finale of the Caravelle Resort Tournament.

The victory completes the weekend sweep of the tournament. The Mountaineers (5-2) are on a five game winning streak.

Dotson (2-0) pitched six innings, giving up one run on six hits. He struck out 10.

Dotson’s mound opponent Zack Hopeck (0-1) tossed six innings. He surrendered four runs on eight hits.

The Chanticleers fall to 4-5 on the season

Cole Austin had two hits, including a solo shot in the third for WVU.

The Mountaineers started the scoring in the first. With one out, Darius Hill singled to center field and scored on Jackson Cramer’s double to left center. Cramer scored on Austin’s base hit through the left side, giving WVU a 2-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Cory Wood singled and stole second. Peyton Isaacson drove in Wood to cut the deficit to one.

The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the third on Austin’s home run and another in the sixth when Braden Zarbnisky scored on TJ Lake’s single to right field.

Jackson Sigman allowed one hit with three strikeouts in two innings of middle relief and Jacob Potock earned his first save by working a scoreless.

WVU’s next game is Thursday at 7 p.m. when travel to Nicholls State.
