Dowie Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 19, 2020) – After leading the Mountaineers to a first-place finish at the Youthtowne cross country course, redshirt sophomore Katherine Dowie of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Notching her first career victory, Dowie finished first overall with a 5k time of 17:58:1 in Clinton, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 16. The Carisbrook, Victoria, Australia native was one of four Mountaineers to finish inside the top five and one of 10 in the top 20 at the meet.

WVU’s first-place finish was over Pitt in its first meet of the season. Dowie and the Mountaineers continue their 2020 season on Friday, Oct. 30, in Lawrence, Kansas, at the Big 12 Championship, at Rim Rock Farm.

This Week in Women’s Soccer: West Virginia hits the road for a Friday, Oct. 23, contest at Oklahoma … kickoff at John Crain Field in Norman is set for 8 p.m. ET … the match will air live on Fox Sports Oklahoma.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 7-ranked Mountaineers (5-1, 5-1 Big 12) won their third consecutive match with a 2-1 victory over Baylor on Oct. 16, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown … junior forward Alina Stahl put the Mountaineers on top, 1-0, in the 36th minute, before senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel tallied the game-winning goal in the 68th … redshirt junior forward Lauren Segalla and sophomore defender Gabrielle Robinson earned assists in the win … WVU outshot BU, 12-5, including 9-3 in shots on goal … sophomore goalkeeper Kayza Massey made two saves, earning her second win of the campaign … Stahl led WVU with four shots, all on goal, while Ferrer-vanGinkel added three more shots on frame … with the win, WVU improved to 7-2-1 all-time against Baylor.

Notes: WVU enters the week atop the Big 12 standings for the second consecutive week … WVU has earned 15 points this season, two ahead of second-place TCU (4-0-1) … West Virginia is 10-0-1 against Oklahoma, including 2-0-1 in Norman … the Sooners are one of three Big 12 foes to never defeat WVU … last season, the Mountaineers earned a 1-0 win over the Sooners on Oct. 20, 2019, in Morgantown … Stahl scored in the 54th minute in that contest, helping WVU to the home win … WVU has scored multiple goals in five of its six matches this season … following last week’s win over Baylor, West Virginia has now won 48 of its last 49 matches when scoring two goals or more … the Mountaineers were slotted No. 7 in last week’s United Soccer Coaches National Poll, which was released on Oct. 13 … as a team, WVU ranks No. 5 nationally in assists per game (1.83) and points per game (6.17), No. 7 in scoring offense (2.17) and No. 8 in shots on goal per game (8.17), total goals (13) and total assists (11) … individually, Ferrer-vanGinkel – the reigning Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week – checks in at No. 2 nationally in game-winning goals (3), No. 7 in total goals (4), No. 11 in total points (9) and No. 12 in goals per game (0.7).

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (5-3) is off this week. 

Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers earned a series sweep over the Horned Frogs at the WVU Coliseum last week, extending their win streak to four with a five-set win on Thursday, followed by a four-set victory on Friday … WVU finished the week hitting .160 with 103 kills and 26 total blocks, including a season-best 16 team blocks on Friday …  senior middle blocker Briana Lynch turned in a team-best 13 total blocks, averaging 1.44 blocks per set, in the two-match series, followed by classmate Audrey Adams with 12 (1.33 b/s) … senior libero Alexa Hasting dug 36 balls over the weekend to average 4.00 digs per set, while junior setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 76 assists to average 8.44 per set … additionally, junior outside hitter Natali Petrova posted a team-best 28 kills in the two-match series, followed by classmate Kristin Lux with 25 swings.

Notes: The last time the Mountaineers won five or more conference matches was in 2017 … with the wins, WVU earned a season sweep over TCU for the first time in program history and improved to 6-4 over the Horned Frogs at home … following Friday’s match, the Mountaineers honored their 2020 senior class: defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor, Adams, Hasting and Lynch … West Virginia has completed the first half of its fall schedule, hitting .191 and averaging 12.8 kills per set through eight matches … Lynch paces WVU with a .361 hitting efficiency, while Petrova averages 3.06 kills per set, good for a team high… Zerwas quarterbacks the Mountaineer offense with 10.08 assists per set … Adams leads the team’s blocking efforts with 1.08 blocks per set, while Hasting anchors the floor defense with 3.38 digs per set … additionally, Petrova averages 2.83 digs per set, notching six double-double performances thus far as a six-rotation player.

This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers do not compete this week … WVU continues the 2020 season on Friday, Oct. 30, in Lawrence, Kansas, at the Big 12 Championship at Rim Rock Farm.

Last Week in Cross Country: WVU finished in first place at the Youthtowne cross country course, hosted by Pitt in Clinton, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 16 … redshirt sophomore Katherine Dowie was the first Mountaineer to cross the Youthtowne finish line in a first-place, 5k time of 17:58.1 … junior Charlotte Wood, redshirt senior Antigone Archer and sophomore Mikenna Vanderheyden also placed inside the top five, collecting second (18:09.2), fourth (18:37.4) and fifth (18:45.0), respectively … redshirt sophomore Hannah Lipps finished in sixth with a time of 18:58.1, closely followed by senior Hayley Jackson in eighth (19:12:3) … redshirt junior Marianne Abdalah finished in ninth with a time of 19:20:04 and freshman Petal Palmer registered a time of 19:25.0 to finish in 10th … redshirt sophomore Samantha Hatcher and freshman Megan Weaver also competed for the Mountaineers and came in 14th (19:48:2) and 20th (20:37:4), respectively.

Notes: Dowie’s victory at Pitt marked her first career win … Friday’s field featured 26 runners representing WVU and Pitt … WVU notched 18 points as a team to earn first place … freshman Petal Palmer made her debut as a Mountaineer … the race marked the Mountaineers’ first and only regular-season meet.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia is set to compete at the 2020 Fall Circuit, presented by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and Universal Tennis … WVU is scheduled to begin play from Oct. 23-25, at The Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers did not compete last week … WVU was scheduled to open its fall season from Oct. 16-18, at the ITA Fall Circuit at Lotito City Park, in Bluefield, Virginia … West Virginia withdrew from the event due to Big 12 health and medical regulations.

Notes: WVU coach Miha Lisac enters his seventh season with the Mountaineers … during his tenure, West Virginia holds a record of 46-83 … seniors Giovanna Caputo and Anne-Sophie Courteau return to lead the Mountaineers this season … WVU also returns juniors Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc in 2020 … Courteau led the Mountaineers with 28 wins in 2020 … Courteau also tied Bovolskaia for the team lead in singles wins, with 14 … Courteau also led the team in doubles victories, with 14 … overall, Courteau holds the most career victories for WVU, with 86.
