Morgantown W. Va. – (September 11, 2020)–Last Saturday, Eastern Kentucky’s head coach Walt Wells coached his first game against the Marshall Thundering Herd. The Colonels lost to Marshall 59-0 in a game that was never close. EKU is coming off an off-season where they fired their head coach Mark Elder. Elder’s staff was replaced with a new coaching staff that fits Well’s system. It’s safe to say that the EKU football players are adjusting to their new game plan on both sides of the ball.
The Colonels offense last Saturday was led by quarterback Parker McKinney. The sophomore threw seven completions in 10 attempts for 71 yards. One of the three incompletions McKinney threw was an interception. In 2019, McKinney completed 52.3% of his passes throwing just shy of 1,400 yards. Marshall was able to pass the EKU O-line and sack McKinney twice last Saturday. The Mountaineers should have no problem putting McKinney in pressure situations on Saturday.
The Mountaineers will have to contain two running backs from Eastern Kentucky. The Colonels like to use their first and second string running backs. Alonzo Booth gained 33 yards in 15 attempts, while Quentin Pringle rushed 6 times for 39 yards. In 2019, Booth rushed for 673 yards, scoring 14 touchdowns for the Colonels. Booth struggled to get big gains against the Thundering Herd, and that’s when EKU started to use Pringle to get him more reps in a real game opportunity. Expect Booth and Pringle to switch out every few plays again this Saturday against WVU.
In the 2019 football season, Eastern Kentucky’s defense allowed 20.8 points per game. This time last year they played Louisville and lost 42-0. It’s obvious that this FCS defense struggles to keep with the FBS offenses. The Mountaineers have had their own struggles on the offensive side of the ball averaging 20.6 points per game, which was 116th out of the 130 FBS schools. It will be interesting to see how many points the Jarret Doege’s offense can put up on the board.
The Mountaineers play the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Saturday, September 12th at Milan Puskar Stadium at noon. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
