MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia women’s soccer freshman Sh’Nia “Nia” Gordon has already began setting herself apart from her Big 12 counterparts.
Last week, representing the opening of the 2015-16 soccer season for the Mountaineers, Gordon was named the WVU Athlete of the Week and the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Week after a stellar performance leading West Virginia to its first victory of the year.
In her old gold and blue debut, Gordon opened her collegiate career with a goal against SIUE. Gordon became the first freshman, along with teammate Hannah Abraham, to score a goal in a WVU season opener since 2008.
“It was great to see our freshmen put the ball in the back of the net,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown in a WVUsports press release. “They contributed right off the bat for us, and I’m proud of Nia (Gordon) and Hannah (Abraham). Their first career goals couldn’t have come at a better time.”
Originating from Ocklawaha, Florida, Nia was recruited to West Virginia as one of the IMG Academy Top 150. She was also ranked the 22nd best forward in the nation.
The Mountaineers currently hold a (1-1) record after beating SIUE 2-0 and falling to #13 Virginia Tech 1-2. Their next match is slated for this Friday, August 28 at Maryland. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
