MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Jermaine Haley had 18 points and had 12 rebounds as West Virginia hung on to beat Northern Colorado 69-61 on Monday night at the Coliseum.
Derek Culver had 13 points and Taz Sherman added eight for the Mountaineers (3-0).
Bodie Hume led the Bears with 18 points. Kai Edwards chipped in 12 points and grabbed nine boards.
WVU dominated Northern Colorado on the boards with a 42-24 advantage.
The Mountaineers’ bench scored 29 points.
WVU started the game on fire.
A pair of free throws by Brandon Knapper with 7:44 left in the first half to give the Mountaineers their largest lead of the game, 30-13. However, WVU’s defense slouched off and the Bears cut the deficit to 40-30 at the half.
After the break, Northern Colorado continued to chip away at the Mountaineers. The Bears used a 16-2 run to tie it at 54-54 on two free throws by Edwards with 6:18 left in the game. But Northern Colorado never regained the lead.
WVU shot 48 percent from the floor, 44 percent from beyond the arc and 68 percent from the charity stripe
The Bears shot 38 percent from the field, 27 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent from the line.
The Mountaineers remain at home to take on Boston University on Friday at 7 p.m.
