Iliff and West Named Associate Head Coaches

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 29, 2021) – West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving head coach Vic Riggs announced Wednesday the elevation of coaches Liz Iliff and Rick West to associate head coaches. Outside of assisting with day-to-day operations, Iliff is now in charge of women’s recruiting and West is now in charge of men’s recruiting.

“I am very pleased to announce these new positions for Liz and Rick,” Riggs said. “Their commitment, dedication and contributions to the swimming and diving program over the years is unmeasurable. As our program continues to move forward, I look forward to their continued leadership and experience to guide our student-athletes in and out of the pool.”

Iliff enters her 10th season with the WVU swimming and diving program in 2021-22. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has played a major role in the success of the men’s and women’s programs, including multiple individual Big 12 champions, over 20 NCAA qualifiers, multiple top five finishes at Big 12 Championships (both men and women), five Olympic Trial qualifiers, over 10 program records and 17 All-Americans.

Prior to joining the Mountaineers, Iliff was the assistant coach at Xavier during the 2009-10 season, while also serving as a senior assistant coach for the Cincinnati Aquatic Club from 2008-10. After finishing the 2009-10 campaign, she spent two successful seasons at New Mexico State (2010-12).

West enters his seventh season in Morgantown in 2021-22. The Moundsville, West Virginia, native began his stint with WVU in 2012 as volunteer assistant coach. In 2015, West was hired on as an assistant coach, alongside Iliff. Much to the same accolades, West has assisted in developing multiple All-Americans, individual Big 12 champions, NCAA qualifiers, multiple top-five finishes at conference championships, Olympic Trial qualifiers, and program records.

Prior to joining WVU, West got his first coaching gig with Wheeling Jesuit as their head coach during the 2001-02 season. Following the 2002 season, West spent time with Ohio State (assistant coach – 2002), Duquesne (head coach – ‘02-03) and Pitt (assistant coach ’03-04) before returning to Wheeling Jesuit. He went on to coach the Cardinals from 2007-12.

Not only has Iliff and West helped lead the Mountaineers to success in the pool, but they also have aided in producing multiple Big 12 Swimming & Diving Scholar Athletes of the Year, CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and Academic All-Big 12 and CSCAA Scholar All-American team members.

WVU kicks off their 2020-21 campaign this weekend with their annual intrasquad Gold-Blue meet on Saturday, October 2, at 10 a.m. The meet will be held at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.
