AMES, Iowa (Feb. 24, 2021) – Iowa State defeated No. 18 West Virginia 85-68 on Wednesday night at the Hilton Coliseum.
Kysre Gondrezick led the Mountaineers (17-4,11-4 Big 12) with19 points. Sophomore guard Kirsten Deans had 14 points and sophomore guard Jayla Heming way added 12. Sophomore forward Esmery Martinez grabbed 10 rebounds.
WVU jumped out to an early leading 19-12 with 4:42 to go in the first quarter. However, the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run to take a three-point lead as the second quarter winded down.
Deans hit a 3 to tie the game but Iowa State took over from there. The Cyclones led 46-38 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Mountaineers pulled within five on a fast-break score from Martinez and an and-1 opportunity from Niblack. Iowa State responded with a 3-pointer.
The Cyclones went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-point lead with 32 seconds remaining in the period. Hemingway drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Iowa State continued to dominate in the fourth and went on a 6-0 run to start the quarter. Deans hit a layup on the fast break at the 8:39 mark. Hemingway sank a three off the Iowa State turnover. Then the Cyclones answered with a layup from Ryan.
WVU finished the game shooting 44 percent from the field while going 80 percent from the free throw line. Iowa State shot 45 percent from the floor and 48 percent from beyond the arc.
The Mountaineers travel to Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday, Feb. 27, for a showdown against Kansas at 2 p.m.
