Isaiah Cottrell signs with WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (November 15, 2019) – West Virginia University men’s basketball coach Bob Huggins has announced that Isaiah Cottrell has signed a national letter of intent for the 2020-21 academic year.

Cottrell is a 6-foot-10, 210-pound forward from Las Vegas, Nevada. He currently attends Huntington Prep in Huntington, West Virginia, playing for coach Arkell Bruce. Previously, he attended Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, where he averaged 15.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game as a junior in 2018-19.

“Isaiah is one of the best high school big men in the country as well as one of the most versatile,” Huggins said. At 6-foot-10, he is capable of playing at both ends of the floor, giving us the ability to utilize a big or small unit with equal effectiveness. He has strong West Virginia roots, which will enable him to understand the history and culture of this great state.”

Cottrell earned first team all-state honors, All-Southwest League first team accolades and led Bishop Gorman to the Class 4A state championship, playing for coach Grant Rice. The Gaels won their eighth consecutive state championship and played in the prestigious GEICO national tournament in New York.

Playing in two games this season at Huntington Prep, Cottrell is averaging 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game in leading his team to a 2-0 record.

Cottrell is currently ranked No. 82 overall in the 2020 class by ESPN.

Cottrell is the third Mountaineer to sign during the early signing period. Earlier this week, Huggins announced the signing of Taj Thweatt, a 6-foot-7 forward from Wildwood, New Jersey (Wildwood Catholic HS), and Kedrian Johnson, a 6-foot-3 guard from Dallas, Texas (Temple College/South Oak Cliff HS).

“This class gives up help at every conceivable position as they are all capable of playing multiple positions,” Huggins added. “This class should go down as one of the better recruiting classes in the Big 12 Conference and beyond.”
