With the off-season officially in motion, coaching changes are in full swing. Former interim head coach of the California Bears Jake Spavital will be making a return to Morgantown. According to Bruce Feldman, current offense coordinator Joe Wickline will undergo a coaching shift as Wickline will replace Ron Crook as offensive line coach. Ron Crook left West Virginia this week to take the role of offensive line coach at Cincinnati. With Wickline moving to coach the offensive line, the Mountaineers will welcome a familiar face back to Morgantown.
Spavital, who has been the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the Bears will be making his return to Morgantown to take the helm of the offense. Spavital will assume the role of offensive coordinator, a role he has had since leaving West Virginia in the 2013 season for Texas A&M.
Spavital has a long history with head coach Dana Holgorsen, the two have coached together at three schools including West Virginia, since Spavital started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Houston in 2009. Wickline also worked with Spavital and Holgorsen while the three were at Oklahoma State.
With three coaches on offense who all share a long line of coaching together, combined with returning Justin Crawford and the emergence of Will Grier at quarterback, it is likely that Coach Spavital will be calling plenty of big plays for the Mountaineers come September.
