Johnson’s Extra Inning Homer Gives WVU Series Opening Win

Friday the Mountaineers beat the ETSU Buccaneers 7-6 in 10 innings. The game was the 4th consecutive 1-run game for the Mountaineers, WVU is 2-2 in those games.  Reliever Blake Smith picked up the victory for the Mountaineers, his 2nd on the season.

West Virginia got on the board in the 1st inning, after Brad Johnson reached base on a 2-out single, Jackson Cramer followed with a 2-run Home Run.

Eat Tennessee countered with 3 runs in the 3rd and 2 more in the 4th.

The Mountaineers picked up a run in the 5th after centerfielder KC Huth led off the inning with a double, and later scored when Justin Fox singled to left.

West Virginia tied the game up in the top of the 6th, Kyle Davis led off the inning with a single. Cam O’Brien then doubled, advancing Davis to 3rd. Shaun Wood grounded out, which allowed both runners to advance, scoring Davis. KC Huth then hit a sacrifice fly that drove in O’Brien.

The Mountaineers took a brief lead in the 9th after short stop Taylor Munden led off the inning with a single, advanced to 2nd on a  Justin Fox sacrifice bunt  and scored on a Brad Johnson singled to left.

ETSU scored in the bottom half of the 9th and sent the game into extra inning.

In the 10th inning, Kyle Davis did not wait long to give the Mountaineers the lead back, homering on the very 1st pitch of the inning.

Eat Tennessee nearly tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Blake Smith forced a 2-out bases loaded ground ball that Justin Fox fielded and forced the runner out at 3rd.

The Victory moved WVU to 5-6 on the season, the loss drops ETSU to 7-4, and marks the 1st time this season the Buccaneers have dropped 2 in a row.
