Liberty Bowl: Behind the Bowl Numbers for WVU

The 2014 Liberty Bowl will be the 33rd bowl appearance all time for the Mountaineers, with a record of 14-18.

The most recent post season appearance for WVU was the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl, where an uninspired Mountaineer team lost to Syracuse 38-14.

The most recent win was the 2012 Orange Bowl where the Mountaineers dominated Clemson, 70-33.

This will be the Mountaineers second appearance in the Liberty Bowl, though it will be the first time playing in Memphis, TN.

West Virginia has had multiple trips to 6 other bowls:

  • Carquest – 1994 and 1997 – Record: 0-2
  • Fiesta – 1998 and 2008 – Record: 1-1
  • Gator – 1982, 1989, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2007, and 2009 – Record: 1-6
  • Peach – 1969, 1972, 1975, and 1981 – Record: 3-1
  • Sugar – 1953, 1993, and 2006 – Record: 1-2
  • Sun – 1938, 1949, and 1987 – Record: 2-1

This will be the third time that the Mountaineers will have played a game in the state of Tennessee. In 1961 the Mountaineers lost 16 – 6 at Vanderbilt, and in 2000 the Mountaineers won the Music City Bowl. The Mountaineers outscored Ole Miss, 49 – 38 in Head Coach Don Nehlen’s final game.

Texas A&M will be the 10th member of the current South East Conference WVU has played. West Virginia is currently 21-23-2 all time against the SEC.

Playing on December 29th has not been too kind to the Mountaineers, as they are 0-3 in games played on that date:

  • 2012 Pinstripe Bowl – Lost 38-14 to Syracuse
  • 1997 – Car Quest Bowl – Lost 35-30 to Georgia Tech
  • 1972 Peach Bowl – Lost 49-13 to North Carolina State.

Finally, current members of the A&M staff are 0-2 against the Mountaineers as coaches. Head Coach Kevin Sumlin was a co-offensive coordinator of the Oklahoma team that lost to the Mountaineers in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. Defensive Line Coach Terry Price was on the Auburn staff when they lost to the Mountaineers in Morgantown in 2008.
