Liberty Finds Bulletin Board Material In Holgorsen Quote

While addressing the media this afternoon in his weekly press conference West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen made a statement that has set social media on fire, especially Flames fans.

When asked about Liberty coming to Morgantown this Saturday Holgorsen went somewhat off topic and addressed how WVU is still scheduling FCS opponents. During his explanation he stated, “I know it’s good for Liberty to come up here and collect a check that can keep their program a float.“.

Despite the fact that Holgorsen continued to say, “I don’t really think Liberty needs it”, the fire had been set.

Holgorsen was undoubtedly referring to some ” Power 5″ conferences refusing to schedule FCS opponents in the future, something that will hurt that level in the future both in recruiting and definitely financially, while others are scheduling multiple FCS opponents.  The Mountaineers are scheduling one FCS school paired with two Power 5 conference schools in the coming years. Holgorsen continued with, “I wish that everybody else would do the same thing. If we are scheduling two power five schools and a non-power five school then I wish everyone else would too, as opposed to what some of the other schools are doing by scheduling an FCS school or two FCS schools and two other non-power five schools. You can figure out who I’m talking about”.

Despite the financial statement that has Liberty fans up in arms Holgorsen did have praise for the program that is coming off it’s first FCS playoff birth last season.

The Flames are coming off a week one victory over Delaware St and moved up to 13th in the FCS polls this week. The Mountaineers are coming off a shutout victory over Georgia Southern 44-0. The two will meet on the field at 3 PM in Morgantown this Saturday.

While WVU will be heavily favored in this contest Liberty fans are now holding onto that quote as motivation. Whether Holgorsen meant that statement as a jab or not is being left up to interpretation by both fan bases.
