MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–Alek Manoah struck out 12 batters as West Virginia defeated Kent State 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Manoah (2-1) pitched 7.2 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits. He walked just one batter.
The Mountaineers (7-5) scored six runs on five hits. Paul McIntosh went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Both Brandon White and Darius Hill had one hit and drove in two runs apiece.
Connor Wollersheim (0-3) suffered the loss for the Golden Flashes (4-8). He gave up two runs on one hit through five innings.
WVU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Darius Hill doubled home two runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mountaineers tacked on one more run. McIntosh led off the inning with a double and moved to third on White’s sacrifice bunt. McIntosh scored when Tyler Doanes reached on a fielding error.
In the top of the eighth, Kent State would make it 3-2. Patrick Ferguson led off the inning with a solo shot to right field. Manoah then issued back-to-back singles before getting a groundout. But a second run would score on Kian O’Brien sacrifice fly to left field.
In the bottom half, WVU added three more insurance runs. Andrew Zitel scored on McIntosh’s base hit to center. White’s single to center and a throwing error allowed McIntosh and Kevin Brophy to score.
