Manoah shines in WVU’s win over No. 23 Oklahoma State

Stillwater, Okla.–Alek Manoah pitched a three-hit gem as West Virginia thumped No. 23 Oklahoma State 11-1 on Friday in the series opener.

The junior tossed eight innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out 11 and walked none, improving to 4-2 on the season.

Marques Inman went 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Brandon White and Ivan Gonzalez each had three hits.

The Mountaineers (18-11) scored 11 runs on 17 hits. The Cowboys (18-10) scored one run on four hits.

Gabe Kurtzhals relieved Manoah in the ninth and gave up a leadoff triple to Oklahoma State’s Noah Sifrit, who scored on Max Hewitt’s sacrifice fly.

Darius Hill had two hits and drove in two runs for WVU.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Tyler Doanes reached on Cade Cabbiness’ fielding error, which landed the sophomore second baseman at third. Then White walked and stole second. Darius Hill’s groundout plated Doanes and Inman’s single through the left side scored White.

Paul McIntosh and Gonzalez each followed with base hits to load the bases. Next, Kevin Brophy walked to give WVU a three-run edge.

In the second, the Mountaineers added a run on Hill’s double to center field.

Gonzalez led off the third with a double down the left field line and scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 advantage.

WVU tacked on two runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.

In the fifth, the Mountaineers continued to surge offensively. Doanes’ base hit drove in Tevin Tucker. Hill then doubled home Doanes and Inman’s double gave WVU a 10-0 lead.

The Mountaineers picked up another run in the eighth.

The second game of the series is on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. (ET).
