MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 26, 2021) – After tallying a pair of career-best performances last week, junior goalkeeper Kayza Massey of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
With the accolade, Massey collects the first Big 12 weekly award of her career, while she was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team in August. The Ottawa, Ontario, native helped the Mountaineers record a pair of scoreless draws in double overtime at No. 21 Texas and Baylor last week.
Massey tallied a career-high seven saves against the Longhorns on Oct. 21, before matching the career-best mark at Baylor on Oct. 24. The totals topped her previous career high of five, which she set during the 2020-21 campaign at then-No. 12 Virginia on April 10, 2021. Massey’s seven stops at Texas and Baylor also marked the most for a WVU goalkeeper since Rylee Foster made eight against the Bears on Oct. 3, 2019.
Along with her back-to-back, seven-save performances, Massey also earned a pair of shutouts against the Longhorns and Bears last week, marking her sixth and seventh clean sheets of the season. The shutouts extended WVU’s clean sheet streak to three in a row, dating back to Oct. 17. Combined, the shutouts moved the Mountaineers defense’s total to nine on the season.
Also of note, Massey ranks leads the Big 12 and sits No. 25 nationally with seven shutouts on the year. The Mountaineer netminder also sits No. 16 in the nation and No. 2 in the conference with a 0.575 goals-against average.
West Virginia returns home to Morgantown on Thursday, Oct. 28, to host Oklahoma State in its final regular-season contest. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, and it also will be the Mountaineers’ Senior Night, as they honor four senior members of the squad following the match.
