Molinari Named Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Nominee

Morgantown, W.Va. – West Virginia University redshirt senior kicker/punter Michael Molinari is one of 182 nominees for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®  it was announced last week.  He is one of 9 Big 12 student atlethes named to the list. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.

Molinari, a Parkersburg, W.Va., native, has played in 38 career games for the Mountaineers. He handled kickoffs for the Mountaineers averaging 63.2 yards on 43 kickoffs with 14 touchbacks last season. He was also named one of the team captains for the spring.

Off the field, Molinari has been named Academic All-Big 12 First Team each of the past two seasons, he has been involved with many community service and volunteer projects. Including, visiting patients at the WVU Children’s Hospital families at Ronald McDonald House, mentoring children at the Parkersburg Boys and Girls Club and working with the Jeff Hostetler Foundation to shop for Christmas presents for underprivileged children the past two years. Michael  has served as a mentor at Stepping Stones, a local group for people with disabilities, he travelled to the southern part of West Virginia to help the Boy Scouts refurbish a community center and athletic fields and worked with Relay for Life.

“Mike Molinari gets it’,” says Donnie Tucker, WVU Athletics Outreach Coordinator. “He is the epitome of a student-athlete. He takes care of his football responsibilities and academics responsibilities and still finds time to get involved with community service/outreach. He is a class young man.”

Also nominated from the  Big 12’s were  Bryce Petty (Baylor), Cory Morrissey (Iowa State), Ryan Mueller (Kansas State), J.W. Walsh (Oklahoma State), Sam Carter (TCU), Bradley Marquez (Texas Tech), JaCorey Shepherd (Kansas), and Nate Boyer (Texas).

For 23 years the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has served as one of the most coveted and prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. The award recognizes players whose charitable involvement and community service contributions stand out among all other student-athletes participating in the sport. Today, Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced a record-breaking 182 nominees from across the country who represent the sport’s finest in the areas of volunteerism and leadership among their peers.

Since its establishment in 1992, the Big 12 ranks second among all conferences with 41 selections. The award has existed to pay tribute to the “good” in college football that extends beyond the wins and the losses. While balancing academics and athletics, this select group of student-athletes nominated by their respective colleges and universities has committed their limited free time to having a lasting impact on their communities.

“It’s great to see all the ‘good works’ these student-athletes are doing at their universities and in their communities,” Grant Teaff, AFCA executive director said. “The AFCA is proud to work with Allstate in highlighting the record number of nominees sent in for the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.”

The 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel includes: former Good Works Team® members Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team), Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team); media members Lou Holtz (ESPN), Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN), Bruce Feldman (Fox Sports),  Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star); current AFCA President and Ithaca College head coach Mike Welch; 1987 AFCA President and former head coach at Brigham Young University LaVell Edwards; and Jim Haskins, president of Allstate’s West Territory.
