Mountaineers down Nicholls St. behind Culver, Tshiebwe

MORGANTOWN W.Va- The Mountaineers defeated the Nicholls State Colonels 83-57 Saturday afternoon highlighted by dominant performances from bigs Derek Culver and Oscar Tshiebwe.

Tshiebwe, who tallied his second straight double-double, struck for the tune of 15 points and 11 rebounds while Derek Culver had 16 points and 16 rebounds in just 27 minutes on the floor.

“He’s come a long way, and he just continues to get better,” said Bob Huggins about Culver. “We just have to get him to slow down a little bit. He catches it at the foul line and makes that jump shot. That makes him even harder to guard.”

The two helped the Mountaineers dominate the glass all game long, and outrebound the Colonels 44-27.

While Derek and Oscar stole the show with thunderous dunks late in the game, Emmitt Matthews Jr., Miles McBride, and Sean McNeil all had double-digit scoring nights for the Mountaineers.

In an all-around performance by the Mountaineers, Huggins highlighted the play of Taz Sherman and Brandon Knapper as other guys who are starting to knock down their shots.

“It was a good team win,” said Huggins.

The Colonels were led by former Mountaineer D’Angelo Hunter, who had 14 points in his return to the Coliseum after playing for Bob Huggins during the 2017-2018 season.

The Mountaineers move to 9-1 with the win and will take a week off before traveling to Youngstown State next Saturday, after finals week.

The game will tip-off at 1:00 PM.
