Normally this time of year coaching staffs are working on the next recruiting class but the WVU staff wasn’t quite done with the 2016 class. WVU was able to secure a commitment from JUCO DE Brandon Lawless on Thursday.
Lawless, a 6’4 260 lbs. defensive end prospect from Los Angeles Valley College (CA), will give the Mountaineers some much needed experience at the defensive end position. Lawless credits the coaching staff for being the biggest reason he is a Mountaineer. “I was able to develop a great relationship with the coaches especially Coach Tall during my recruitment. WVU is an historic program with nothing but great things about it.”
Lawless also has the ability to play the OLB position which is very similar to the skill set that former WVU DE Shaq Reddick. While that skill set is there for Tony Gibson to use, Lawless says that Gibson sees him as a defensive end in the 3-3-5 scheme.
Lawless is a welcome addition for the Mountaineers defense and will provide WVU with a pass rushing ability that they seemed to lack at times last season.
Lawless is expected to arrive on campus this summer in order to be ready for fall camp. The athletic defensive end has four years to play three season at WVU. Lawless also had offers from Wyoming and New Mexico State.
