MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 3, 2021) – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team was ranked No. 23 in the USA TODAY/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Preseason Poll, announced Wednesday.
The Mountaineers received 165 points to rank 23rd in the opening poll after finishing the 2020-21 campaign as the 24th-ranked squad.
West Virginia has now been preseason ranked by four organizations. Lindy’s Sports Magazine tabbed WVU as the nation’s No. 16 team on Sept. 17, the Associated Press (AP) slotted the Mountaineers at No. 19 on Oct. 19, and ESPN.com ranked West Virginia No. 13 in its preseason poll on Oct. 28.
West Virginia is one of four Big 12 Conference teams featured in the Preseason Coaches Poll. Baylor received 495 points to rank eighth, while Iowa State garnered 258 points to check in at 16th. Texas came in at 21st after earning 180 points.
West Virginia officially opens the 2021-22 campaign on Tuesday, Nov. 16, when the team welcomes Saint Francis (Pa.) to Morgantown for the season opener. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
