Mountaineers Slotted at No. 4

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 5, 2021) – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team was placed at No. 4 in this week’s United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men’s National Poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The Mountaineers fell one spot following their 0-0 draw against Akron on Sept. 30, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. With the ranking, WVU has now been featured in the poll’s top five for five consecutive weeks.

Georgetown remains at No. 1 this week, ahead of No. 2 Washington and No. 3 Duke. Along with West Virginia, No. 5 Marshall rounds out the top five.

Tulsa is up to No. 6, while New Hampshire sits at No. 7. Kentucky, Virginia Tech and SMU complete the top 10 at No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

The Mountaineers are the lone Mid-American Conference club in this week’s rankings. However, Akron, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois all are receiving votes.

Elsewhere, WVU held at No. 3 in Monday’s College Soccer News poll. It also moved up two spots to No. 7 in TopDrawerSoccer’s Top 25.

Individually, senior defender Aaron Denk Gracia was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Men’s Team of the Week on Tuesday. The Mannheim, Germany, native becomes the second Mountaineer to be selected for the weekly team this season, joining junior midfielder Luke McCormick (Sept. 7).

Denk Gracia helped the Mountaineers tally their third consecutive clean sheet with last week’s result against Akron. In all, West Virginia has recorded six shutouts in nine matches so far this season.

WVU returns to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 5, when the squad embarks on a four-match road trip, beginning with a nonconference tilt at Lehigh. Kickoff at Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, is set for 7 p.m. ET.
