STILLWATER, Okla.–In a high scoring shootout, No. 16 Oklahoma State defeated West Virginia 21-11 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cowboys scored 21 runs on 13 hits while the Mountaineers scored 11 runs on 10 hits.
WVU pitchers combined to hit six Oklahoma State batters.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the first on Vince Ippoliti’s RBI single.
In the top of the third, WVU extended its lead to 3-0 when catcher Paul McIntosh blasted a two-run bomb over the left field fence.
However, the Mountaineers lead wouldn’t last long. In the bottom of the frame the Cowboys exploded for 10 runs.
As usual, WVU wasn’t going to go away quietly. Hudson Byorick’s three-run double cut the deficit to 10-6. Oklahoma State answered in the bottom half with two more runs.
Senior Kevin Brophy homered to left field but Carson McCusker’s double and Alix Garcia’s sacrifice fly put the Cowboys ahead 14-7.
Ippoliti made it a 14-8 contest in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to left field but Oklahoma State tacked on an additional two runs in the bottom half.
The Mountaineers added two runs in the seventh. McIntosh scored on a fielding error in the eighth and made it a 16-11 game.
Oklahoma State picked up five runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Carlson Reed (1-2) suffered the loss and Trevor Martin (2-0) earned the win.
WVU travels to Pittsburgh for the Backyard Brawl at 3:00 p.m.
