CHARLESTON, W.Va.–Ivan Gonzalez drove in three runs as No. 21 West Virginia University defeated in-state rival Marshall 8-4 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.
The sophomore catcher went 4-for-5, scoring three runs and driving in three, including a two-run homer in the sixth.
The Mountaineers (22-13) swept the season series against the Thundering Herd (18-18).
Riley Troutt (1-0) picked up the win for WVU. He tossed five scoreless frames, surrendering four hits and striking out four.
In the first inning, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Gonzalez singled and Jackson Cramer walked. Darius Hill singled through the left side, driving in Gonzalez. Then, Jimmy Galusky’s base hit scored Austin.
Marshall addd a run in the second. Leo Valenti’s base hit to center field knocked in Tommy Lane.
In the third inning, Gonzalez scored on a balk. However, Marshall answered in the bottom half on Shane Hanon’s double to center field.
WVU tacked on another run in the fourth and Kyle Davis’ solo shot in the fifth gave the Mountaineers 5-2 lead.
The Thundering Herd pulled within one after a two-run fifth but Gonzalez’s home run in the sixth pushed the lead to 7-4.
The Mountaineers added another insurance run in the ninth. After giving up a leadoff single, Troutt retired the next three batters.
WVU travels to Kansas State for a three-game series against the Wildcats on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
