CLEVELAND–Miles “Deuce” McBride scored a career-high 21 points as No. 22 WVU upset No. 2 Ohio State, 67-59, on Sunday afternoon in the Roman Cleveland Classic.
The Mountaineers (11-1) fell behind 37-28 after Luther Muhammad hit a 3 with 58 seconds to go in the first half. However, WVU refused to go away and took the lead for good with 3:31 left in the game courtesy of Derek Culver. McBride sank two free throws and a jumper to extend the Mountaineers’ lead to 59-54.
Kaleb Wesson drained a 3-pointer to pull the Buckeyes (11-2) within 61-57 with 51 seconds remaining. Strong defense by WVU caused Ohio State to miss shots on their next two possessions.
Jordan McCabe hit two free throws and a steal and score by Chase Harler game the Mountaineers an 8-point edge.
Harler tallied 10 points and Culver had seven points and 10 boards for WVU.
The Buckeyes committed 22 miscues.
Wesson had 17 points and nine rebounds for Ohio State. Duane Washington Jr. had 12 points.
The Mountaineers shot 40.7 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc. WVU made just 15-of-25 from the charity stripe.
Ohio State 31.3 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range.
The Mountaineers travel to Lawrence to take on Kansas next Saturday.
