Plitzuweit adds four-star recruit to inaugural roster

New West Virginia women’s basketball coach, Dawn Plitzuweit continues to add to her first roster as the head coach of the Mountaineers.

On Monday, Plitzuweit announced the signing of Imarianah Russell. Russell, is a 6-foot guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, and is listed as a four-star recruit by ESPN in their class of 2022 rankings.

“We are very excited to welcome Mari (Russell) to our Mountaineer family,” Plitzuweit said. “She is a tremendous competitor and proved that by bringing home a state championship this past season! Mari’s also a very versatile player, as she can shoot it, attack the rim, post up, rebound and defend just about any position on the floor as well. The combination of everything she brings allows her to be a great fit for our program! We are thrilled to welcome Mari and the Russell family to our WVU women’s basketball program!”

In her four seasons in high school, Russell was named as an all-state player in Ohio each of those four seasons. She scored over 2,000 points in high school, and this past season led her team to a 27-2 record, and led Reynoldsburg High School to their first ever state championship.

Russell was nominated for the 2021-22 McDonald’s All-America Game and finished second place in the running for Ohio Division I Player of the Year.

Russell originally signed to play last summer under previous head coach Mike Carey, while holding offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Pitt, Seton Hall, Temple, Xavier.
