At 6-8 on the season the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are all but out of the playoff hunt. And while James Winston and Doug Martin have gotten most of the publicity this season it is Charles Sims who is turning heads.
With just two games remaining in the season the second year tailback and former Mountaineer running back is just 116 yards from surpassing 1,000 all purpose yards. Sims has seen action in all 14 games this season totaling 469 yards on the ground on 99 carries and 416 yards receiving on 39 receptions.
Sims was expected to take over for Doug Martin when he was drafted in the third round in 2014. However, Martin has continued to impress on the field surpassing 1,300 rushing yards this season. Despite Martin’s resurgence, Sims has become a reliable second option for the Bucs.
Sims finished the game Thursday night against the Rams with 50 yards on just seven carries (7.1 yards per attempt) in route to accumulating 70 total yards for the game. With his continued productivity many are considering the second year back the best backup in the league and part of potentially the best one-two combination in the NFL although with Martin.
