Quick Hit: The Bengals release Mario Alford with the waived/injured designation

This could have been the year that Mario Alford supplanted Ben Tate as the Bengals return man, however an ankle injury during the preseason kept him from earning the job. Tate was also released.

On Tuesday, the Bengals announced that they gave the second year man from WVU the Waived/Injured designation. Alford was injured in the first preseason game, and early last week was seen in a walking boot. He did not play in the previous two games for the Bengals.

The move means that should Alford clear waivers, Cincinnati can sign Alford to their practice squad.

– Also over the weekend, the Carolina Panthers waived rookie Jared Barber. The defending NFC Champs are loaded at linebacker, and Barber’s chances of making the 53-man roster were slim from the start. However, I have heard that should Barber still be a free-agent following the last round of cuts early next week, the team could bring him back for their practice squad.
