Report: Dana Holgorsen will look for new safeties coach

As news broke last night of defensive assistants Joe DeForest and Damon Cogdell leaving the Mountaineer staff the immediate question asked was who will be replacing the departed coaches.

Half of that question was answered with the report of former Texas assistant coach Joe Wickline joining the Mountaineer staff. Wickline has spent significant time in Morgantown leading up and during the Mountaineers preparation for the Cactus Bowl. He most recently spent two seasons as the Longhorns offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Wickline’s path to Morgantown also took him through Oklahoma State, where he and Holgorsen coached together, Florida, and even Baylor. Wickline will reportedly be the new offensive coordinator for the Mountaineers, a position left vacant this past season after the departure of Shannon Dawson in 2014.

With one coaching hire all but complete there is still one opening left. All indications are the next hire, and the one that will round of the 2016 football staff, will be a direct replacement for Joe DeForest. DeForest was the safeties coach this past season.

Bruce Tall will presumably be the sole defensive line coach in 2016. The coaching convention is this week, you can expect to hear names surface. Reports have indicated that Holgorsen and Gibson already have coaches in mind though for the position.
