BlueGoldSports.com has confirmed that Alabama Deputy Director of Athletics Shane Lyons will accept the position of Athletic Director at West Virginia University. An official announcement should come Monday. Lyons’ name was immediately added to the short list when it was announced that Oliver Luck would be leaving WVU on January 15th to take a new position with the NCAA in Indianapolis.
A native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Lyons is also a 1987 graduate of West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management, Lyons also earned a master’s degree in Sport Management from WVU in 1988. Before taking the position at Alabama, Lyons was the associate commissioner of the ACC from 2010-2011. Sources tell BGS that Lyons has always wanted to come home and that he is excited for this opportunity.
Lyons will have to hit the ground running, as the WVU head football coach is in the middle of extending coaching contracts as well as looking for a replacement for departed offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
WVU is also in the process of looking to replace former WVU volleyball coach Jill Kramer who recently resigned from WVU to take the Director of Volleyball position at TCU, her alma mater.
