2016 WR prospect Steven Smothers has been labeled as the next Tavon Austin by many national recruiters and head coaches but there’s nobody he’d rather be compared to than his God brother. “It’s big to be compared to him and by him being my God brother it makes it even better,” Smothers said upon being asked about it, “I can go to him and ask him what his experience at WVU was like while he was there.”
While Smothers enjoys the comparisons to Tavon, his performance on the football field is creating quite a buzz on the recruiting front with the Mountaineers the school to beat. “WVU is #1, I’ve been to WVU so many times that with each new visit it feels like coming home,” but during this past weekends trip something new caught Smothers attention, “the new facilities stood out to me during camp visit this weekend.”
Also during the camp Smothers was able to develop a relationship with someone that could be a big factor in his production. “Cody Saunders and myself were able to talk during the camp for a little bit.” Saunders is a 2016 quarterback commit for WVU and would love to see Smothers catching passes from him in the future. Along with Saunders, Smothers lead recruiter Lonnie Galloway and WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen were able to speak with him and the relationship they have developed is another key part of Smothers recruitment to WVU.
While the Mountaineers appear to be in a great position for Smothers, it’s a decision that he doesn’t want to rush, “I’m going to announce when I feel right about my decision.”
One things is for sure, if Smothers pick WVU then Mountaineer Nation should be prepared to see a playmaker that reminds them of a former superstar.
