Stahl Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 26, 2020) – Following her game-winning goal on Oct. 23, at Oklahoma, junior forward Alina Stahl of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Stahl helped the Mountaineers to a 1-0 win over the Sooners when she found the back of the net in the 20th minute last Friday night at John Crain Field in Norman, Oklahoma. The tally marked her third goal of the season and first game-winner of 2020. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native has scored goals in back-to-back contests and leads the squad with 13 career goals. The win marked WVU’s fourth in a row. 

Stahl is tied for No. 2 in the Big 12 in goals (3) and sits No. 3 in the conference with seven total points.

This Week in Women’s Soccer: West Virginia returns to Morgantown for its final home match of the fall against Kansas on Friday, Oct. 30, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET … the contest is a Pink Match in support of breast cancer awareness month.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: The Mountaineers (6-1, 6-1 Big 12) earned a 1-0 win over Oklahoma on Oct. 23, at John Crain Field in Norman … junior forward Alina Stahl netted the game-winning goal in the 20th minute, marking her third goal of the season and first game-winner … defensively, WVU earned its second shutout of the season and first since Sept. 11, at Iowa State … sophomore goalkeeper Kayza Massey made a season-best three saves in the victory, while recording her first career clean sheet … West Virginia outshot OU, 12-8, including 8-3 in shots on goal … five Mountaineers finished with multiple shots in the win … the victory marked the Mountaineers’ fourth straight, as they    improved to 11-0-1 all-time against the Sooners.

Notes: WVU and Kansas are set to meet for the 11th time on Friday night … the Mountaineers lead the series, 7-2-1, including 2-1 in Morgantown … last season, the two schools met twice, with the Jayhawks winning, 2-0, on Nov. 3, 2019, in the Big 12 Championship Quarterfinal … in the first matchup of 2019, WVU settled for a 1-1 draw on Oct. 24, 2019, in Lawrence … WVU was ranked No. 6 in last week’s United Soccer Coaches National Poll, marking the team’s fifth straight top-10 ranking to begin the campaign … Kansas was ranked No. 8 in the poll … the Mountaineers sit in second place in the Big 12 standings, one point behind first-place TCU (6-0-1) … the Mountaineers enter the week ranked No. 3 nationally in shot accuracy (.590), No. 6 in points per game (6.17) and scoring offense (2.17), No. 7 in assists per game (1.83) and No. 9 in shots on goal per game (8.17) … individually, senior midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel sits No. 2 nationally with three game-winning goals, No. 10 in total goals (4) and No. 14 in total points (9).
