Aggies and Mountaineers Making Return Trips to Bowl

Two of the top offensive teams in the country, the Texas A&M Aggies and the West Virginia Mountaineers, will meet in the 56th AutoZone Liberty Bowl on December 29, 2014 at 1 p.m. (CST). The game will be televised by ESPN.
Texas A&M will be making its second appearance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Aggies last appeared in the bowl 39 years ago. The Aggies played USC in the 1975 game.
The Aggies’ offense is led by Kyle Allen, a freshman quarterback who exploded on the national scene when he led Texas A&M to a 41-38 win over then third-ranked Auburn. For the season, Allen passed for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns.
This will also be West Virginia’s second trip to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Mountaineers will be marking the 50th anniversary of their first appearance in the game in 1964. That was the famous game played against Utah at the Atlantic City Convention Hall, college football’s first indoor bowl game. The bowl moved to Memphis the following year.
The pass-and-catch combo of Clint Trickett and Kevin White lead West Virginia’s high-powered offense. Trickett passed for more than 3,200 yards and 18 touchdowns, while White had 102 receptions for 1,318 yards and 9 TDs. The Mountaineers offense is ranked 11th nationally, averaging 502 yards per game.
Both teams finished the regular season with 7-5 records.
Steve Ehrhart, Executive Director of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl:
“In the first year of our new SEC versus Big 12 format, we’re proud to welcome back both Texas A&M and West Virginia. This will be the first ever meeting between the Aggies and Mountaineers. The two teams have never met in either the regular season or in a bowl game. West Virginia’s history with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl is special and we look forward to Mountaineer fans following their team to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and joining us in saluting the 1964 West Virginia team that made history in our game fifty years ago. Texas A&M also has a wonderful history and passionate fans. With the fabled 12th Man leading the Aggies to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, we’ll have a great show between two outstanding teams and two motivated and energized groups of fans.”
Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M Head Coach:
“It’s a great honor to be selected to play in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl against a great opponent in West Virginia. It’s a huge opportunity for our team to win a bowl game in four consecutive seasons, which is something we’ve never done in 119 seasons of football at Texas A&M. I’m excited for our team to get a chance to experience Memphis and I’m sure it will be a popular destination for our fans.”
Eric Hyman, Texas A&M Athletics Director:
“We are very pleased to accept the invitation to participate in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. It’s a great accomplishment and reward for our program. I know it’s a big goal for Coach Sumlin and our team to become the first Texas A&M team to win a bowl game in four straight seasons. Memphis is a great destination for the 12th Man and I’m sure our fans will be there to support the team.”
Dana Holgorsen, West Virginia Head Coach:
“We faced a very challenging schedule this season with five Top 12 teams and playing a tough opponent like Texas A&M in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be yet another challenge this year. We had a good season and getting to play in a bowl game is a great way to reward our players, especially our seniors. We will prepare hard for this bowl game and try to finish this season on a strong note.”
Oliver Luck, West Virginia Director of Athletics:
“West Virginia certainly has a history with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl that dates back 50 years. We are excited for our football program to be back in a bowl game, and the city of Memphis will be a great place for our players, staff and fans. I know they will really enjoy the experience, and the Mountaineers look forward to an exciting visit to Memphis. The game against Texas A&M will provide the AutoZone Liberty Bowl with a very exciting matchup.”
