AUSTIN, Texas–Texas thumped No. 17 WVU 10-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon to avoid the series sweep.
The Longhorns (25-21) scored 10 runs on 13 hits. The Mountaineers (26-15) scored two runs on seven hits.
Starter Kade Strowd was chased from the game after three-plus innings of work. He surrendered six runs (four earned) on five hits while walking three.
Ty Madden picked up the win for Texas. He pitched six innings and gave up one run on six hits.
In the top of the second, WVU scored first when Marques Inman scored on Phillip Dull’s groundout. However, the Longhorns had an answer in the bottom half of the frame when Lance Ford’s two-run homer gave Texas a 2-1 lead.
The Longhorns added a run in the third but the Mountaineers pulled within one in the fourth on an RBI single to center by TJ Lake.
Texas tacked on three in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 6-2 contest. Then the Longhorns extended their lead to 10-2 in the sixth on a grand slam by Ford off freshman right-hander Brock Helverson.
WVU returns home to host in-state foe Marshall on Tuesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m. (ET).
