Twelve Days of Mountaineers Day Three: Mountaineers Upset Baylor in Hoops to end Regular Season

Day three of the Twelve Days of Mountaineers looks back at the last basketball season for the Mountaineers’ 2019-2020 season. The Mountaineers upset then-number 4 Baylor at home to finish the regular season with a 21-10 overall record.

West Virginia’s Senior Day started off eventful with senior Chase Harler proposing to his longtime girlfriend prior to the start of the game. Senior Day celebrated Chase Harler, Logan Routt and Jermaine Haley before West Virginia tipped off what was truly a must-win game. The Baylor Bears were ranked fourth in the AP at the time and the game was a must-win in order to salvage a season full of ups and downs prior to the Big 12 conference tournament week in Kansas, City Missouri.

Emmitt Matthews Jr. was the king of the court in the home finale, leading the way with 18 points, with the team leading 24-22 at halftime. Oscar Tshiebwe, Sean McNeil, and Miles McBride all contributed double-digit points in the upset.

The Mountaineers’ win allowed the team a first-round bye for the Big 12 conference tournament which was set to take place the following week in Kansas City. The tournament was officially called off, as well as the NCAA March Madness Tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the home win over Baylor, many thought that was the push the Mountaineers needed to go into the Big 12 tournament, and later March Madness. A home upset over a top-ranked conference opponent wound up being the 2019-2020 season finale in a season cut short.
