Former Mountaineer’s Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan won their gold medal match in women’s soccer for the Canadian National Team.
After being down in the first half 1-0, Team Canada tied the game in the second half off of a penalty kick, and then won the game in penalty kick’s to give Canada the gold medal.
Both Lawrence and Buchanan played for West Virginia and came from Canada to do so. Lawrence played for West Virginia between 2013-2016, scoring 13 goals and being responsible for 25 assists in her career, while playing in the midfield. Buchanan played for West Virginia in the same span between 2013-2016 and she finished with seven goals and eight assists as a defender.
Both Buchanan and Lawrence played in 68 games during their Mountaineer careers.
Team Canada defeated Brazil and the United States to reach the final after qualifying out of Group E which included Japan, Great Britain, and Chile.
This is both Lawrence’s and Buchanan’s second medal after they both finished with a bronze medal after the 2016 Olympics.
